Q – Tell me how your head restraint should be set, to give you the best protection.

The rigid part of the head restraint should be in line with the eye line or top of the ears and as close as possible to the head

Q – Tell me where would you find the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how should they be checked.

In the owners hand book. Use a reliable pressure gauge, ensure tyres are cold and do not forget the spare.

Q – Open the bonnet and show me where you would check the engine oil level and tell me how you would know if you have sufficient oil.

Identify the dip stick and explain how you would check the oil level against the max. & min. markers.

Q – Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with the anti-lock braking system.

Identify the warning light and explain that it would stay on if there was a problem.

Q – Show me how you would check the handbrake for excessive wear, keeping safe control of the vehicle.

Apply the footbrake. Release and then re-apply the handbrake explaining that it should be secure and should NOT be at the end of its working travel.

Q – Open the bonnet and show me where you would check the coolant level and explain how you would know if there was sufficient coolant.

Identify the coolant reservoir and explain you check the max. & min. level.

Q – Show me how you would change the lights from dipped beam to full beam and explain how you would know they are on full beam.

Operate the light switch and explain that there is a blue light showing when on full beam.

Q – Tell me how you would check the brakes are working properly before starting a journey.

Explain you should pull away slowly and try the brakes; they should not feel slack or spongy and should not pull to either side.

Q - Show me how you would set the demister controls to clear the front and rear screens

Demonstrate by operating the controls.

Q – Open the bonnet and show me where you would check the brake fluid level.

Identify the brake fluid reservoir and explain you would check the max. & min. levels.

Q – Show me how the horn works.

Operate the horn.

Q – Show me how you would clean the front windscreen using the windscreen wipers and washers.

Operate the switch.

Q – Tell me how you would check the brake lights are working.

Explain you would operate the brake pedal (ignition on, but do not start the engine) and look for reflections or get somebody to look.

Q – Open the bonnet and show me where you would check the window washer level.

Identify the washer reservoir and explain you would check the level on the neck of the bottle.

Q – Show me or tell me how you would know if there was a problem with your power assisted steering.

Turn on the ignition and turn the steering wheel, explain how it feels heavy then start the engine show how lighter it is or explain that if it is not working properly it will feel heavy.

Q – Tell me what you would be looking for in the general condition of the tyres to know that they are road worthy.

There should be no cuts or bulges on the outer walls of the tyre, and a minimum 1.6mm tread depth across the middle ¾ of the width of the tyre and all the way around the circumference.

Q – Show me how you would check that the direction indicators are working.

Turn on the hazard lights and walk all the way around the vehicle to check. Explain that you could also put the indicators on individually.

Q – Show me how you would put the rear fog lights on and explain when you would use then.

Operate the switch and explain they should be used when visibility is below 100 metres.

Q – Show me/Tell me how you would check the head lights and tail lights are working properly.

Operate switch and walk all around vehicle or explain.
